Abstract
The importation into South Africa of plastics components for the motor vehicle industry is often unattractive due to high shipping costs for bulky items and an unacceptably high damage factor in other cases. Local production runs are short, and the relatively low tooling costs for foamed polyurethane production is an incentive for the development of designs based on polyurethanes. Some such developments are discussed briefly.
