Polyurethane elastomers (PUEs) containing conventional and mesogenic hard segments were prepared from poly (oxytetramethylene)glycol (PTMG), 2.4-toluene diisocyanate, and mesogenic diols and/or 1,4-butanediol. The mesogenic diols used are 4,4'-bis(2-hydroxyethoxy)benzophenone, and dihydroxy-p-quarterphenyl. Effects of addition of mesogenic diol to 1.4-butanediol on mechanical, thermal properties, and morphologies of PUEs were investigated.
