Abstract
This paper looks particularly at the characteristics of gifted mathematicians. The author scans the lives of a number of eminent mathematicians, highlighting the differences and also the essences of their mathematical talent.
In a very direct way, the writer presents a series of examples of primary and secondary pupils' insights into mathematics outlining the implications for the school and the teacher.
The paper concludes with suggestions for policy and provision.
