Matilda, a verbally talented girl at 9 years 6 months was only above average at 12 years 9 months. An examination of her environment indicated three factors working against her: (1) peer pressures, (2) the inability of her parents to guide her leisure reading, and (3) teachers neglect of her reading. Luby likewise found that gifted teenagers in a gifted programme were more likely to be unsatisfactory if their parents were not well educated and teachers did not work to bridge the gap between the home and the school.
