Abstract
This paper discusses the competencies and understanding which will enable teachers to serve gifted students more effectively. The focus is on:
personal and psychological characteristics of the teacher of the gifted, competencies which the teacher ought to possess, the design of in-service training, the professional education of teachers and the professional capabilities of teacher trainers. The writer succinctly surveys the relevant research and also focuses on the specific programme for teacher training at Purdue University.
