Abstract
Should parents be allowed the right to choose the kind of school they want for their child? Do existing independent schools offer gifted children opportunities which are not always present in maintained schools? If this is so, what should maintained schools be doing to make certain that pupils whose parents cannot afford independent education, are, nevertheless, receiving full opportunity to develop their potential? Do state schools really involve pupils and parents in full discussion of pupils' needs and interests?
