In this article the author discusses the effects of media debates around 'political correctness' on the development of anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice in health and social care. This is linked to a dis cussion of the often neglected psychological theories developed by Frantz Fanon and David Cooper. It is argued that these provide a more robust apologia for anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice than any of the arguments put forward by would-be apologists for such initiatives who have participated in media-orchestrated debates about 'political correctness'.
