Abstract
This article focuses on the work and politics of La Lega per il Diritto al Lavoro degli Handicappari-The National League for the Right to Work of the Handicapped. The League represents a new politics of disability in Iraly-one which, particularly in respect of its insistence on an equal alliance with professionals-it considers lacking within the international movement of disabled people. This article, based on the author's experien ces of working closely with the League whilst living in Italy, looks at the associations and organisations of disabled people and their relation to the Italian welfare state, including reference to some of the more important legislation affecting disabled people, the centrality of the League's politics of the right to work, looking particularly at the law concerning the alloca tion of work to disabled pevple; its other work on the abolition of architectural barriers; its theory and practice; its position on profes sionals; and on international work.
