Abstract
It is the aim of this section to include summaries and comments on recent developments in law and policy in the social welfare area. This covers short notes on changes in the law or administrative practice as well as discussion and criticism of the implications of political strategies or social events. In this issue we look at some disturbing developments in probation practice, and at the social and political implications of the 'riots' of last summer. In future issues we hope to discuss recent developments in health, education and social service policies; and we would welcome contributions of 2000 to 3000 words in these or other areas. Contributions to this section should be sent to Pete Alcock, Dept. EBS, Sheffield City Polytechnic, Pond Street, Sheffield, S1 1WB.
