Obviously, an enormous amount of study has to be done in each language to discover and describe all details of its discourse structure, but we should try to get at least some basic concepts clear. Discourse studies have been made in a number of languages all over the world, and some very important features have been described. A number of useful hand books have been published. The most practical one I know is Kathleen Callow's Discourse Considerations in Translating the Word of God. Grand Rapids, Michigan: Zondervan1974.

The standard treatment of discourse features is still Joseph Grimes: The Thread of Discourse. The Hague: Mouton1976.

Also useful: LongacreR.: Anatomy of Speech Notions. Lisse: Peter de Ridder1976.
