Abstract
Large projects undertaken by governments as part of development programmes displace a large number of people from their normal habitat. Rehabilitation and resettlement of displaced persons in new sites has, therefore, become an important matter for governments.
In this article, Hathi describes the objectives and processes of rehabilitation and resettlement programmes which have social, economic, and cultural ramifications. After reviewing the rehabilitation packages of several large projects in India, Hathi states that best results in rehabilitation can be attained when monitoring of the implementation of the package is incorporated in the project document itself.
