Abstract
What are the factors that explain variations in returns to farmers? Based on a study of 250 farmers in Chakdah block in West Bengal, Bora and Ray found that knowledge of new agricultural technology—high yielding varieties, fertilizers, and plant protection—was the most important factor.
In enhancing the managerial ability of farmers, the authors feel that emphasis should be given to developing an orientation for planning and marketing and skills in decision making and communication, besides new agricultural technology.
