Abstract
This paper reports the findings of a research team set up to probe indigenous styles of management. Combining personal interviews with a study of the annual reports of some 230 organizations listed on Indian stock exchanges, the author reports that indigenous styles of management may be more appropriate to the Indian context than imported models. Significant differences in management styles are noticed within industries and within the same business group. A fusion of western approaches with indigenous styles, the author believes, presents many interesting possibilities.
