Abstract
Banks in India have been assigned a new role in the developmental process after their nationalization in 1969. The new tasks that have been assigned to banking industry have demanded it to develop expertise for a wide spectrum of activities and develop a professional attitude. This paper examines the strains and stresses the new role has produced and provides an indepth analysis of the facilitating and restraining forces.
