Re viewing listening: ‘Clip culture’ and cross-modal learning in the music classroom

Abstract

This article envisions a new, cross-modal approach to classroom music listening, one that takes advantage of students’ rising screen literacy and the ever-expanding archive of music-related visual material available on DVD and on video sharing sites such as YouTube. It is grounded in current literature on music performance studies, embodied music cognition studies, and screen multimedia studies. Seeking ways to bridge corporeal and cognitive approaches to music analysis, the article links this literature with the recent phenomenon of ‘clip culture’ and provides a sequence of exemplar introductory clip analyses organized according to a framework being developed to inform teacher preparation and classroom work schemes. Cross-modal listening in the context of the emerging clip culture, the article proposes, has the potential to contribute to the ways musical life and education is undergoing reorganization according to plural co-existing contexts and perspectives, including in the areas of pedagogy, technology and media, and repertoire and analysis.

Re-voir l’écoute: La ‘Clip culture’ et le développement d’un cadre analytique afin d’intégrer l’apprentissage trans-modale dans la salle de class de musique

Cet article envisage une approche trans-modale inédite à l’écoute de la musique dans la salle de classe, profitant des connaissances numériques qu’apportent les élèves modernes ainsi que les archives toujours grandissant des matériaux musico-visuel disponibles sur de nombreux supports numériques comme DVD et YouTube. Cette démarche se base sur les littératures actuelles issues de plusieurs axes de recherche, y compris la performance musicale, les connaissances dites « enactives », et les médias ayant pour support un écran numérique. En cherchant des manières de lier plusieurs approches cognitives et corporelles à l’analyse musicale, cet article tire un trait entre ce corpus et le phénomène récent de la « clip culture », fournissant un ensemble d’analyses de clips représentatifs classées selon des critères analytique qui permettent à l’enseignant d’intégrer ces clips au sein de ses cours et sa préparation. L’écoute trans-modale peut, selon nos recherches, contribuer à la façon dont l’éducation musicale se réorganise en fonction de plusieurs nouveaux contextes et perspectives actuels, notamment dans les domaines de la pédagogie, les technologies médiatiques, et l’analyse du répertoire.

Ein zweiter Blick aufs Hören Die Kultur des Clips und die Entwicklung eines theoretischen Rahmens cross-modalen Lernens im Musikunterricht

Dieser Artikel beschreibt einen neuen, übergreifenden Ansatz zum Musikhören im Klassenraum, einer Form des Hörens, die ihren Vorteil aus der zunehmenden Fähigkeit der Schüler in Bezug auf Bildschirmarbeit und dem sich immer weiter vergrößernden Musik bezogenem visuellen Material, erhältlich auf DVDs und Videoseiten (wie zum Beispiel youtube) zieht. Begründet ist dieser Ansatz in aktueller Literatur zum Thema Musikperformance, Studien über Musikwahrnehmung und Studien über Bildschirmmedien. Auf der Suche nach einer Vereinbarung körperlicher und kognitiver Ansätze in der Musikanalyse verlinkt der Artikel die Literatur mit dem neuen Phänomen der “Clip-Kultur” und stellt eine Abfolge beispielhafter Clip-Analyse vor, die entsprechend eines Rahmenkonzeptes Lehrervorbereitung und Klassenraum als Arbeitsumfeld einbezieht. Laut dem Artikel hat “Kanal-übergreifendes” Hören in Verbindung mit der aufkommenden “Clip-Kultur” das Potential, auf musikalisches Leben und musikalische Bildung einzuwirken, indem sie eine Reorganisation der vielfach zusammen existierenden Zusammenhänge und Perspektiven, auch in den Bereichen Pädagogik, Technologie und Medien und Repertoire und Analyse erfährt.

Reconsiderar la audición: La cultura del videoclip y el desarrollo de un marco para el aprendizaje multimodal en el aula de música

Este artículo propone un nuevo enfoque multimodal para la audición en el aula de música, aprovechando el creciente conocimiento que tienen los estudiantes sobre el material visual relacionado con la música disponible en DVD y en sitios para compartir vídeo como YouTube, y aprovechando sus archivos en continua expansión. El artículo se fundamenta en estudios actuales sobre interpretación musical, sobre la cognición musical relacionada con el cuerpo, y sobre las pantallas multimedia. Al buscar puentes entre los enfoques cognitivos y corporales sobre el análisis musical, se vincula esta bibliografía con el reciente fenómeno de la “cultura del videoclip” y se proporciona una secuencia de análisis de videoclips introductorios ejemplares, organizados según un marco que apoya la preparación del profesor y las estrategias de aula. Este artículo sugiere que la audición multimodal, en el contexto de la cultura del videoclip emergente, puede contribuir a las formas en que la vida musical y la educación están reorganizándose de acuerdo con contextos y perspectivas plurales coexistentes, incluyendo las áreas de la pedagogía, la tecnología y los medios de comunicación, y del repertorio y el análisis.
