Abstract
Adopting an autobiographical style, we recount a formative experience in Dr Luis Moll’s course on Vygotsky and Education, during our time as graduate students in the Language, Reading, and Culture program at the University of Arizona. He invited Spanish-speaking students to form a discussion group around Ferreiro’s Caperucita Roja Aprende a Escribir (Little Red Riding Hood Learns to Write). A small group of us committed to meeting weekly with Dr Moll to read and discuss the book. These informal sessions were enriching, productive and intellectually stimulating, and they gave rise to ideas for collaborative research and publication. We describe a teaching and research experience conducted in a bilingual second-grade classroom at a public school in Tucson. This work was deeply influenced by the intellectually enriching space created by Dr Moll and by our collective inquiries into text, language and learning. Each author reflects on how this experience and his mentorship have shaped their lines of research and professional trajectories in literacy and education.
