Abstract
In 1982 the FNV (Dutch Federation of Trade Unions) consulted the opinions of its grass root members on its policy towards the immigrant workers. Research showed that these members endorse, at least verbally, the necessity for solidarity with immigrant workers, but only on the basis of a ‘trade-off: in exchange for their support immigrants are expected to assimilate more into Dutch society than they have done until now. There is a strong assimilationist tendency among the unionists, especially as far as Muslims are concerned. Special measures taken by the FNV on behalf of the foreign members are resisted by native members.
