Abstract
This note has two objectives. One is to provide a brief overview of quantitative estimates of Colombian emigration, including formal attempts to estimate the volume of net emigration. The second objective is to update the existing estimates with more recent data (in a highly speculative fashion). The goals of the note are modest. We attempt to summarize existing evidence while providing a brief discussion of how the estimates were preapred. Some of the estimates we discuss involve a very laborious methodology impossible to summarize in a few paragraphs. The ultimate goal of the exercise is to derive a “plausible” estimate of the extent of Colombian net emigration in 1980, although no claim is made that this estimate is correct or final. A more definitive estimate will not be available until after the careful and detailed evaluation of the 1980 round of censuses, although even these data will fail to yield answers to many questions related to the volume of Colombian emigration.
