This article presents an examination of cultural determinants of patterns in the postmigration employment of European immigrants to Philadelphia who entered skilled and semiskilled manual occupations in manufacturing from 1900 to 1935. Hypotheses concerning immigrant employment difficulty, deduced from assimilationist theory, are evaluated using a 1,078 case sample of retrospective work histories gathered by Gladys L. Palmer in 1936.
