Internal Migration in Brazil

Abstract

The significance of internal migration for social change is a sociological theme highly debated in Latin America today. The article that follows briefly examines internal migration in Brazil. These migrations are not new, but they are increasing at the present because of a rapid process of urbanization.

The author analyzes inter-regional, inter-State and intra-State population movements and assesses the causes underlying them: droughts and inundations, latifundia and limited opportunities in rural areas. He concludes by pointing out the social and economic consequences of internal migrations and the Government's reaction to them.

Las migraciones internas, fenómeno ya conocido en Brasil, están aumentando en la actualidad a causa de la rápida urbanización. El autor analiza brevemente los movimientos de la población en tres niveles, entre las diversas regiones, entre los Estados, y dentro del mismo Estado y expone las consecuencias sociales y económicas de esas migraciones internas y la pocas oportunidades en las áreas rurales. El artículo concluye analizando las consecuencias sociales y económicas de esas migraciones internas y la reacción gubernamental.

Les migrations de l'intérieur du Brésil, quoique peu nouvelles, s'accroissent aujourd'hui à cause d'une urbanisation rapide. L'auteur analyse brièvement les mouvements de la population dans les régions, dans les états et parmi les états, et il évalue les causes de base de la migration intérieure: manques de pluie et inondations, grands propriétés privées, opportunités limitées dans les régions rurales. Finalement, l'article se termine par une discussion des conséquences sociales et économiques des migrations intérieures et la réaction du Gouvernement à leur égard.

Infolge rasch zunehmender Verstaedterung nehmen heute die Binnenwanderungen in Brasilien, obgleich nicht neu, merklich zu. Der Autor analysiert kurz inter-regionale, inter-staatliche und intra-staatliche Bevölkerungsbewegungen und bestimmt die Gründe, die der Binnenwanderung zu Grunde liegen: Trockenheiten und Ueberschwemmungen, Latifundien und begrenzte Erwerbsmöglichkeiten in ländlichen Gegenden. Mit der Bestimmung der sozialen und ökonomischen Folgen der Binnenwanderungen und der daraus erfolgten staatlichen Massnahmen schliesst der Artikel.
