Puerto Ricans in Perspective: The Meaning of Migration to the Mainland

Abstract

This article will first examine the unique characteristics of the Puerto Rican migration; secondly, it will study the process of assimilation particularly in relation to the search for identity which presents a number of special problems to the Puerto Ricans. It will analyze one of the special problems of identity which consists in a shift from an emphasis on culture to an emphasis on power as the basis for the establishment of a strong Puerto Rican community. Finally it will seek to interpret the experience of the Puerto Ricans as part of the human effort and suffering inevitably involved in the continuing creative achievement of New York City. In the historical perspective of the past migrations to the City it is reasonable to be optimistic about the present one.

To strengthen this optimistic view, the creative, mobile elements among the Puerto Ricans must assume a greater role in the institutional structures and decision making processes of the mainland.

L'auteur de cet article examine d'abord les particularités de la migration porto ricaine; deuxième, il étudie le progrès d'assimilation surtout du point de vue de la recherche d'identité qui présente plusieurs problèmes spéciaux pour les Porto Ricains. Il analyse un des problèmes d'identité qui consiste en un changement de l'insistance sur la culture à l'insistance sur la force comme base de l'établissement d'une forte communauté porto ricaine. Enfin, il essaie d'interpréter les épreuves des Porto Ricains comme faisant partie de l'effort humain ainsi que les souffrances qui résultent de l'achèvement continuel et créateur de la ville de New York. En examinant la perspective historique des migrations précedantes vers la Ville, on peut être optimiste en ce qui concerne celle de ce moment.

Este artículo examina primero las características singulares de la inmigración puertorriqueña; en segundo lugar, estudia el proceso de asimilación, en particular con relación a la búsqueda de identidad que presenta un número de problemas especiales a los puertorriqueños. Analiza uno de los problemas típicos de identidad, consistente en el cambio de énfasis en la cultura a énfasis en el poder como base para el establecimiento de una fuerte comunidad puertorriqueña. En fin, trata de interpretar la experiencia de los puertorriqueños como parte del sufrimiento y esfuerzo humanos, consecuencia inevitable del continuo progreso creador de la Ciudad de Nueva York. A juzgar por la perspectiva histórica de las pasadas emigraciones a la Ciudad, hay razones para sentirse optimista en cuanto a la presente.
