Abstract
With regard to communication theory and the every day practice of journalism, the significance of Park's insight is immense. The event orientation of Western journalism is due to scientized methods of news collec tion which typically ignore underlying tendencies, pressures, and attitudes that thrust certain events to the surface of human consciousness. The upshot of Park's thought would require that journalists take greater cognizance of the substratum of human events in a way that would, in turn, require them to become "acquainted with" their subject matter so as to know it virtually by heart.
