Truly, press freedom in the colony and young state of
Massachusetts meant more than the Blackstonian concept that there should be no prior restraint. It is uncertain how accepted the Blackstonian definition of press
freedom was in theory; but, in practice, publisbers went
beyond those limits with impunity.
