Thus, to criticize an individualist ethic is to deny neither the importance
nor the romantic appeal of individual
responsibility. The point of this discussion is not that individual action is
wrong or impossible, or that an individual sense of responsibility is bad
or impossible. The point is that insti tutional constraints set definite limits
on individual action and also help to
shape an individual's sense of responsibility.
