Pharyngeal diverticula were documented by barium swallow radiographs in 21 out of 28 laryngectomy patients. Four patients with severe dysphagia from large diverticula were treated by transoral excision of the posterior or “party” wall with the CO2 laser. Recurrence of the pouch is common, and repeated treatment is sometimes necessary.
