The nursing profession advocates developmewnt of theoretical knowkdge as a basisfor nursing practice and promotes preparation of graduate students as nursing scholars. his study explored the influence of selectedfactors on the publishing efforts of student authors who published in the Weste Joual of Nursing Resnch during a 5-yearperiod Assignments, particularlyfora dissertation, provided a signfficant impetusfor publishing. Se#f-sececton ofa topic of interest also was an important factor. Approximately one third of the student authors had collaborated withfaculty as coauthors. Graduate students make a significant contribution to the creation and dissemination of nursing knowledge. The influence of collaboration with faculty, the defining elements ofcollaborative mentorship, and inherent ethical issues should be investigated infuture studies.
