Abstract
This paper is focused on discourse associated with the recent social movement to eliminate the use of Native American mascots in the United States. The researcher analyzed the recent Super Bowl and World Series protests against the use of these mascots, media coverage related to this movement, and transcripts of interviews with a few of the movement leaders. It is argued that many of those who oppose the elimination of the mascots feel attacked because the movement challenges a particular version of American masculine identity that is founded on Western mythology.
