Among the most frequently proposed approaches to dealing with disci pline in schools is behavior modification. Although behavior modifica tion is anything but a new approach, it has received an increasing amount of attention and notoriety since the 1980s, largely because of Lee Canter's advocacy of "assertive discipline."
