Abstract
Amitai Etzioni, founder and director of the Center for Policy Research, is a widely recognized scholar and adviser to gov ernment and non-government agencies. His theory of rein dustrialization arises during most discussions of America's economy and the role of institutions, including schools, in shaping the future.
Not all of his ideas will be accepted by school administra tors, but they will stir the imaginations of many to think deeply about schools and their role in society. Readers who wish to pursue his ideas further can find them in the 12 books he has authored. His writings also appear frequently in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and Psychology Today, among others.
A former senior adviser to President Carter, Etzioni is now University Professor at George Washington University in the District of Columbia. Before going to the nation's capital he was professor of sociology at Columbia University.
In this interview with Thomas Koerner and Carol Bruce of the Bulletin, Etzioni talks about what he believes should be the primary role of America's secondary schools.
