Abstract
In 1970 the Russell Sage Foundation issued guidelines for school record keeping which emphasized the importance of protecting the right to privacy, which is increasingly threatened in modern society. Over 100,000 copies of the report have been distributed. A foundation sociologist discusses implications of that report here.
