Abstract
"During the Great Depression... society legiti matized a temporary exemption from perform ance on the mortgage contract by means of the moratorium. The psychosocial moratorium which is permitted in the institution of early adolescent education is another such special case; it offers a temporary exemption from the more strenuous performance demands of the stu dent role. Such an exemption, however, cuts against the grain of dominant cultural values and, to continue the metaphor, many profes sionals in education just cannot cut it."
