Abstract
Educational standards are dropping. Demands on young people are not rigorous enough—as adults, we are too permis sive ; as young people, they are altogether too easy-going. In a headlong drive to serve everyone, schools and colleges have succeeded only in lowering requirements. As a result, far too many young people rush blindly on to college. That is why so many seem to be more interested in protest than in learn ing. It is also the cause of a catastrophic college dropout rate. The time has come for schools and colleges to toughen up and begin instilling some respect for values in our young people.
