Abstract
"Perhaps it is because we have not listened very well that we find many young people not ac cepting the behaviors we feel to be so vital to the basic nature of our democratic society.... Beards and sideburns, miniskirts and beads are, to many of us, visible evidence of the erratic behavior of youth ... whereas, in actuality, such patterns of appearance are often only messages telling us they want to be different-to be them selves."
