Abstract
The reviewer of Albert Valdman's "Programmed Instruction versus Guided Learning in Foreign Language Acquisition" says that programmed learning of foreign languages is "for the birds." Read on! He means that cliché both literally and figuratively. In addition, and in contrast, he makes a strong case for guided learning of second languages.
