Abstract
Thirty-eight alternative teacher certification candidates responded to an open-ended questionnaire designed to probe their motivation for entering teaching and their perceptions of strengths they can bring to the secondary classroom. Thirty-two of the candidates who were already teaching also described the nature of the support received during their first year of teaching. Results provide insights for principals about similarities and differences between alternatively certified and traditionally certified teachers.
