Abstract
According to the U.S. Census, approximately 32.7% of grandparents are the sole caregivers of their grandchildren under the age of 18. Previous research has focused on the stressors of caregiving, with less attention given to the emotional resilience and personal growth that it can foster. Fourteen grandparent caregivers (GPCs) participated in the study exploring the factors contributing to their life satisfaction, the rewarding aspects of caregiving, and related challenges. The results showed that a sense of purpose, emotional fulfillment, support systems, and personal growth enhance the life satisfaction of GPCs. The rewarding aspects included providing a stable, loving environment, witnessing their grandchildren thrive, and experiencing personal fulfillment. The challenges included a loss of freedom, systemic barriers, and financial obstacles. Policymakers can help enhance the life satisfaction of GPCs by expanding access to financial assistance, legal support, and other essential resources that enable them to navigate their caregiving roles more effectively.
