An interval scale is developed to measure deviation from the normative sequencing of first job, marriage, and birth of first child. The scale scores have predictive utility for marital instability and work interruptions. Use of the scale scores as an independent variable provides information over and above that provided when Hogan's temporal sequence categories are used as the independent variables, and use of the former allows use of more powerful analytic techniques.
