Abstract
Social science studies tend to provide information on linkages between achievement of male offspring and fathers. Usually, nothing is said about mothers. The idea that mothers may be fundamental in the achievement of their children was advanced as a hypothesis. Particular attention was given to the association, if any, between the education of mothers and the achievement of male offspring. Based on an analysis of the achievement of five outstanding black scholars, a conclusion was reached that the encouragement of mothers was a constant experience.
