A common concern of service providers and caregivers in caring for the Alzheimer's Disease patient is the decision to institutionalize. An implicit rational model of the decisionmaking process, from the onset of the disease to institutionalization, informs intervention and coping. Observational data gathered in three settings show that the rational model is not as representative of the decisionmaking process as it is a practical artifact of it.
