Abstract
This article undertakes an examination of all major aspects of this subject. Objective prerequisites for an exceptional role for the military in sociopolitical affairs of the states of the region are identified as a marked rise of executive power in conditions where class differentiation is incomplete and an economically powerful, and politically authoritative, class is lacking. The author analyzes the reasons for political instability, the most important manifestation of which has been a vast number of military coups. The question of relations between the army and society is also posed. Motivation within the army is examined.
