Abstract
In this paper, the author classifies the centralised databases in China; provides statistical data to illustrate the current state of development; analyses the distribution of users, the scope of searchable databases, their scale and sources, the online retrieval systems introduced from foreign countries, Chinese centralised database production and CD-ROM development. The paper also addresses some current issues in the development of databases in China, including pro duction structures, commercialisation, management, scale production, advertising and intellectual property protection.
