Abstract
Based on theoretical considerations of an earlier article in the Journal of Information Science [4], this paper focuses on to what extent and how business-oriented libraries and information centres in the Nordic countries have imple mented strategic quality management (SQM). For this purpose, an operational assessment model encompassing the relevant criteria for measuring SQM in library and information services (LIS) sector environments is proposed. Then, empirical findings from the 1995 Nordic SQM survey of business information services (corporate information centres, special libraries and academic libraries) are presented to highlight managerial problems and inconsis tencies and to identify target areas for future library management improvement efforts. The data analysis includes the application of advanced statistical techniques, such as factor and cluster analysis.
