A survey of past post-graduate diploma students of the department of library and archival studies of the university of Ghana: 1970/71-1980/81

Abstract

This study, the second in a series initiated in the Department of Library and Archival Studies (DLAS) of the University of Ghana, aims at using the views of past graduates of the Graduate Diploma in Library Studies programme (1971-1981) to assist in evaluating and reviewing the curricu lum. It also seeks to establish and maintain contact with past students for mutual benefit. The questions covered respon dents' work place and job responsibilities; courses they stud ied and their relevance to their present jobs; and the efficacy of teaching/learning processes. The responses suggest, inter alia, what subjects are most relevant to their jobs, what improvements in terms of new subjects and enhancement of existing ones are required to strengthen the programme and make it more relevant.

A corpus of literature is gradually being built by proponents of the concept of grass roots information centres. They include Kingo Mchombu, W. Aiyepeku, and Diana Rosenberg.

Examples of recent conferences on information systems for rural dwellers include the Biennial Congress of the Ghana Library Association held in Nov. 1990, two held by the Commonwealth Library Association in Accra, Ghana on September 1991, in New Delhi, India, in August/ September, 1992.

Such surveys of past students at Sheffield have been carried out regularly and consistently since 1964. The latest that has come to my attention is that by A.J. Hulme and T.D. Wilson , published in the Journal of Information Science, 14(2) (1988) 109-117.
