After an historical survey of the progressive appari tion of politics and policies in the scientific and technical information field in France, we present some of the present characteristics of French politics and policies in this field: in the private and public sectors, at the regional, national and international levels. The role of professional and scientific societies is also discussed, and some comments are made on the education and research politics and policies in the infor mation field.
