Abstract
The background to the Single European Market is de scribed and the information implications are discussed. The European Commission Council Directive of 21 December 1988 will make it easier for UK information specialists to work abroad. If the British information professions are to take advantage of these new and challenging opportunities, the Institute of Information Scientists, the Library Association, the Schools of Library and Information Studies and individuals in the information world must take steps to ensure that these opportunities are not neglected.
