Speech is rapidly evolving as a very important Man-Ma chine interface in information retrieval applications, and the British Library has recently awarded a grant jointly to the Departments of Information Studies and Computer Science, The Queen's University of Belfast, to investigate the use of a voice input/output interface for online searching. In this paper we describe the aims and background of our project as well as the feasibility, benefits and human factor issues involved in the development and implementation of speech-based interfaces.
