Abstract
This paper examines the complex subject of communica tions technology by using the notion of emerging 'paradigms'. In so doing, it focuses on the following key areas. It provides an overview of the communications technology; addresses the concept of 'paradigm' and relates it to contemporary interna tional and national (Australian) communication theory and research practice concerning such technology; and finally it considers how such emergent paradigms might affect the tradi tional study of communication.
