Using published data, this paper reviews (a) the develop ment of public library reference collections in authorities of different sizes in relation to contemporary professional think ing ; (b) the distribution and level of resources for reference service inherited by post-reorganisation authorities. Evidence suggests that despite the size of present authorities, improve ment in the level of traditional reference provision is open to question.
