Abstract
NEPHIS is a system of computer-assisted permuted sub ject indexing designed to be easy for the indexer, the pro grammer, and the user; and to be economical. Titles of about 3000 publications of the Canadian Department of Energy, Mines and Resources were coded with NEPHIS tags to pro duce a 'quick-and-dirty' index. A brief manual of practice was built up, and problems and costs were analysed. An experiment using simulated queries supported the hypothesis that a NEPHIS index allows quicker location of items on specific subjects than does a KWOC index.
