Abstract
The present situation and future development of the scientific information and documentation system in Austria was the topic of a Delphi-study conducted at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in April 1976 - March 1978. After a brief analysis of the 'information flood' and its reasons, general trends in information and documentation up to the year 2000 are examined: Future sources and media of scientific and technical information, questions of education and organisation, the impact of new technical developments, etc. The study ends with an investigation of potential crises, problems, and bottlenecks, as well as suggestions for improve ment. Even if the study was mainly oriented towards the Austrian situation, nevertheless most results seem to be of more general validity and might be of interest for informa tion scientists from other countries as well.
